From the Author
I love day trips and was very surprised to find that there were no books specifically gathering together information on places to visit within a short drive of The Villages community in Central Florida. With that in mind, I set about documenting places I discovered or were recommended to me. Here are my favorites, complete with photographs and detailed directions including GPS co-ordinates, what to do, when to go and where to eat. Enjoy visiting estate homes, botanical gardens, wineries, natural springs, old towns and state parks on this feast of days out in Central Florida. I hope you find as much enjoyment as I did in visiting them all!

Old Florida: Florida's Magnificent Homes, Gardens and Vintage Attractions

Old Florida: Florida's Magnificent Homes, Gardens and Vintage Attractions Review

Although today Florida is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, many of the architectural landmarks that reflect its colorful and diverse history remain unknown. An adventuresome group of pioneers were drawn to the uncharted and exotic landscape of late
nineteenth-century Florida, creating buildings of extraordinary imagination and beauty. Since then Florida has experienced a century of remarkable architecture, from the ornate Italian villa Vizcaya to the Venetian Pool of Coral Gables to the Art Deco hotels of South Beach to the the Ringling Museum house, called Cad'Zan.

This book is the first to capture the full range of styles, from the ornate, opulent, and spectacular, to the charming, country "Old Florida," which is now becoming so popular. Residents and tourists alike will appreciate both the renowned sites and a private glimpse of such amazing attractions as the orange-grove cottage where Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings wrote The Yearling and Thomas Edison's winter home, which has a fascinating laboratory.

Florida Roadkill: A Novel

Florida Roadkill: A Novel Review

Sunshine State trivia buff Serge A. Storms loves eliminating jerks and pests. His drug-addled partner Coleman loves cartoons. Hot stripper Sharon Rhodes loves cocaine, especially when purchased with rich dead men's money.

On the other hand, there's Sean and David, who love fishing and are kind to animals -- and who are about to cross paths with a suitcase filled with million in stolen insurance money. Serge wants the suitcase. Sharon wants the suitcase. Coleman wants more drugs . . . and the suitcase. In the meantime, there's murder by gun, Space Shuttle, Barbie doll, and Levi's 501s.

In other words, welcome to Tim Dorsey's Florida -- where nobody gets out unscathed and untanned!

Camping is one of life's great pleasures, and Florida has plenty to offer those who need a quick getaway. But how to find the best from the more than 1,000 choices in the state? The campgrounds in the fourth edition of this popular guide were chosen based on three criteria: they had to be accessible by car but not overrun by RVs; boast great scenery; and be as close to a wilderness experience as possible. Ranging from forest to swamp to coast, these sites are rated by a five-star system for beauty, noise, privacy, security, spaciousness, and cleanliness. Each profile provides essential details on facilities, reservations, fees, and restrictions, as well as an accurate, easy-to-read map. For native Floridians or out-of-state vacationers, this exhaustively researched guide makes it easy to find and enjoy the best tent-camping experiences in the state.
